A life under glass – Contemporary English sonnet

by

Introduction: contemporary sedentary life

The sedentary lifestyle represents one of the most widespread conditions in contemporary society, characterized by a significant reduction in physical movement and an increasing stay in closed environments. With the advent of digital technologies, this static nature has taken on a new form: no longer simple inactivity, but immobility accompanied by continuous stimulation.

Through digital devices, the individual is constantly exposed to content that simulates real experiences: travel, relationships, knowledge and daily activities. This exposure generates a perception of participation in the world which, however, does not translate into concrete experience. A tension is thus created between virtual presence and physical absence, between what is observed and what is experienced.

The following composition fits into this context, offering a poetic reflection on the condition of those who cross multiple realities without ever leaving their own space. The form of the sonnet, traditionally ordered and structured, contrasts with this dispersion, becoming an instrument of analysis and containment of contemporary experience.

Text

I scroll through travels, recipes and news,
I scroll for hours, fixed in formless space,
I change a world of ever-shifting views,
While I remain within a single place.

I find a joy that leaves me far too soon,
Like I lose my anger... at last.
I seem to hear a melancholy tune
Of all the many things I have not passed:

To walk the lands only seen in part,
To cook the meals within the photo's spread,
To find a truth with the braver part.
Is there a path where my mind is led?

To know the life I could have only dreamt,
With love and purpose that my soul had meant.

Commentary and technical analysis

Metrics and structure

The sonnet follows the classic structure of the English sonnet with three quatrains and a concluding couplet. The rhyme scheme recalls the ABAB CDCD EFEF GG model, with some variations that reflect a contemporary sensibility. Iambic pentameter is present in a flexible form, contributing to a natural and discursive rhythm.

Themes and contents

The central theme is digital sedentary lifestyle, understood as an experience of physical immobility accompanied by continuous exposure to virtual stimuli. The repeated gesture of "scrolling" becomes a symbol of a passive experience, in which the subject passes through multiple realities without actually participating in them.

Two main levels emerge: on the one hand, the immediate and fleeting satisfaction provided by digital content; on the other, a growing awareness of the void left by unlived experiences. The text evolves towards a tension between desire and immobility, between aspiration and inertia.

Symbolism and rhetorical figures

  • Metaphor of scrolling: the "scroll" represents the passive flow of time and experiences.
  • Spatial contrast: the change of the world contrasted with the static nature of the subject.
  • Synesthesia: the “melancholy tune” translates regret into sound perception.
  • Enumeration: travelling, cooking and learning represent concrete dimensions of experience that are denied or postponed.

Interpretation

The composition follows a path of consciousness: from passive participation in virtual reality to the recognition of one's own immobility. The final couplet condenses the meaning of the text, expressing the desire for an authentic life, founded on love and purpose. However, the lack of resolution leaves the reader in a state of suspension, reflecting the very condition described in the sonnet.

NARRATIVE RHYMES - blog was created in 2012 with the first works and romantic phrases inspired by classical poetry, thanks to the author Umberto F. M. Cefalà. Later in the 2013 pointed towards a creative line with the testing of the Open Source project that is of poems by multiple authors. Poetry 2014: the blogspot published My metaphors, a study of the figures of speech with new definitions and ad hoc examples; in the same year, to coincide with the Milanese works for the Universal Exhibition - 2015, the blogspot led EXPO project, concerning the representation of the most famous Italian dishes. In 2015 focused attention on those increasingly popular crafts as the grinder or the cobbler. It was also facing contemporary art with the spread of cultural events of all sorts, but always presented in a poetic. With poems 2016 he held particularly to highlight developments on environmental protection.
